Indian Market & Powwow slated for May

The Tesoro Cultural Center will host the 14th annual Indian Market & Powwow May 17-18 on the grounds of The Fort, a historic restaurant and living museum in Morrison.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students with a valid ID. Seniors, Tesoro member and children under 12 are free. The event, at 19192 Highway 8, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and features Southwestern art, cuisine, dance, music and hands-on educational activities.

Since its first year in 2000, the event has grown to feature premier Native American artists from around the country. Artists will demonstrate their crafts to visitors and are judged by respected experts in the field. Traditional drummers and dancers will pay tribute to their heritage and compete against others in categories of native Jingle, Fancy, Traditional, Shawl and Grass dancing. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science will present an interactive beading exhibit for children and families. Concessions for the event will be donated by The Fort restaurant.

In addition to the celebrations of art, dance and other cultural heritage, Tesoro’s Indian Market & Powwow honors outstanding American Indian veterans. Last year’s honorees were the Sister Nations Color Guard including Staff Sergeant Cindy Littlefeather (Army, active duty), Specialist Sunshine Woodenlegs (Army Reserves), Specialist Carisa Yazzie-Gonzalez (Army veteran), Sergeant First Class Toni Eaglefeathers (Army Reserves), Specialist Shawna Dahl (Army veteran), Specialist Glenda Littlebird (Army veteran), Staff Sergeant Monica Weeks (Army veteran) and First Lieutenant Micah Highwalking (Army, active duty).

The Tesory Cultural Center is sponsored by the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Native American Bank, 9News, Kinney Oil Co., Colorado Creative Inudstries, Entravision and Rocky Mountain PBS.
