CU Denver to offer free lecture series on architecture

Building on the popularity of its Mini-STEM School, the University of Colorado Denver is has added series of free evening lectures in arts and architecture.

The Mini-School for Arts & Architecture will be held on the Auraria Campus beginning at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 and continuing each Thursday through March 20 in the Baerresen Ballroom at the Tivoli on the campus.

Faculty from CU Denver faculty deliver lectures that are understandable to everyone.

"We modeled this event after the Mini-Med School," says Inge Wefes, associate dean of the CU Denver Graduate School. "It’s thrilling to see how interested the audience is and how people present on their expertise."

Topics to be covered include the Magic of Architecture; Architecture and Water and Food Scarcity in Guatemala; Two Landscape Architects Walk into a Bar; and Advancing Community Identity through Historic Preservation.

"We will be presenting several case studies and engaging with the audience in thinking through certain problems," says Chris Kozial, associate professor in the Department of Architecture who is presenting the historic preservation lecture. "Often when we decide a building is of historic value, one of the first questions that comes up is do you preserve it as is, or do you try to restore it to that earlier period. It's not just about saving old buildings and turning them into museums or restricting people from developing property."

Participants are required to register in advance for the series, and anyone who attends at least six of the eight lectures will earn a Certificate of Participation. Walk-ins for individual lectures will be admitted on a space-available basis.
