DaVita grows in Denver, happy with new LoDo HQ

DaVita, the largest company with headquarters in Denver city limits -- ranking 359 on the 2012 Fortune 500 -- is poised to grow locally and nationally.

"Denver is the world headquarters for DaVita," says Director of Communications Vince Hancock. "The overwhelming majority of our executives are here."

DaVita employs about 650 at its unmistakable building in LoDo, with plenty of room to grow -- the facility has the capacity for 950. Altogether, the company has 50,000 "teammates" across the country at 2,000 dialysis clinics. "We are constantly growing," says Hancock.

DaVita moved to Denver from El Segundo, California, in 2009, broke ground on the headquarters in 2011 and began working out of the building in mid-2012. "It's been fantastic," says Hancock of the move.

"Why did we leave L.A.?" he says. "Number one, we are a nationwide company, and having an office on one coast is logistically difficult. L.A. was a difficult place to entice executives to live. It's shockingly expensive and brutal to travel to."

Denver is not only centrally located and affordable, but the lifestyle was a big draw, Hancock says. "People are thrilled with the quality of life here, no matter where they moved from," he says. "It's the commitment to a healthy lifestyle, which is important to us because we're in healthcare. That's the way you avoid kidney disease."

Hancock touts DaVita's community involvement. The company recently donated about 13,000 pairs of shoes to schools in early April as part of "Shoesapalooza."
